We in the UK lost our great tradition of illustrated posters some time ago… boo-hoo. It’s not fair… the spaces illustrators are offered to work on are getting smaller and smaller. From 12inch LP cover to CD cover to, erm, where do I put the illustration on an MP3?
Never mind. Here are some illustrations from a poster competition for the drink Byrrh from the end of the 19th/start of the 20th century. They are from the catalogue for the exhibition at the Musées des Arts Décoratifs in 1992. The catalogue was called “Byrrh, L’affiche Imaginaire” and was published by Pernod S.A. Mécénat and the Union des Arts Decoratifs. I believe the authors were Réjane Bargiel and Daniel Hémard. If I have incorrectly attributed authorship or breached any copyright please let me know.
